NCT retest: your next steps

Read the inspection report, arrange repairs and keep both deadlines in view.

By Agustín Mendez · Reviewed 16 September 2026

Start with the Vehicle Inspection Report

Read the overall result and the listed defects before deciding what to book. A repair invoice is not the same as an NCT certificate. The report and NCTS determine whether a visual re-inspection is enough or test-lane equipment is needed.

Keep two deadlines separate

Book a retest within 21 days of the original test and complete it within 30 days. A booking made within the first deadline does not extend the second one. Use the actual dates printed on the report and ask NCTS promptly if no suitable retest is shown.

  • Arrange repairs early enough to allow the return inspection.
  • Keep the report and note the booking deadline and completion deadline separately.
  • Outside the permitted period, NCTS says a full test is required.

Choose the return inspection

A retest without equipment is free; an equipment retest costs €40 including VAT under the published schedule. A visual-only return does not require an appointment according to NCTS, but check the centre’s date-specific hours and breaks before travelling. Do not assume a defect is visual-only just because the repair was quick.

What to bring back

Take your presenter identification, vehicle paperwork and inspection report. Tell the centre about the relevant return inspection. Confirm the options with NCTS if you want to attend a different centre; do not infer transfer arrangements from proximity alone.

If you disagree with the result

Raise the issue with the person in charge at the centre. NCTS advises that an appeal needs the vehicle re-presented in the same condition as at the test. Ask about the complaint or appeal route before repairs change the evidence; do not keep driving a car with a dangerous defect while disputing a result.

After the return inspection

Check the resulting report and certificate details before leaving. If issues remain, ask the inspector what is still outstanding and which deadlines apply. Do not assume each failed return starts another 30-day period.

Choose your situation

What applies to you?

Open the case that matches your situation. These notes guide your next step; they do not check your booking.

My result says minor

NCTS describes this as a pass with minor faults recorded, but the faults must be repaired and the car re-presented before the certificate is issued. Confirm the required return inspection.

Organise your return visit →

My result says major

The vehicle has failed. Arrange the necessary repairs and observe the 21-day booking and 30-day completion windows.

Check the retest charge →

My result says dangerous

Do not use the vehicle on the road. Arrange safe transport with your repairer and follow the repair and re-inspection instructions. A retest booking does not remove the dangerous defect.

NCT retest: your next steps: checklist

Copy the actual dates from your inspection report:

Original test date: ________________

Book by (21-day limit): ________________

Complete by (30-day limit): ________________

My confirmed return date: ________________

This is a paper worksheet, not a date calculator. An appointment within the booking window does not extend the completion deadline.

Common questions

Are the 21 and 30 days working days?

The retest guidance says days, unlike the separate cancellation rule which specifies working days. Follow the dates on your report and ask NCTS if a deadline is unclear.

Is a free visual retest outside the deadline still free?

Do not assume so. NCTS requires completion within 30 days or a full test is needed.

Can I drive after a dangerous result?

NCTS states that a vehicle with a dangerous defect should not be used on the road. Arrange safe transport rather than driving it to a repairer.
