The person presenting the car needs identification
NCTS specifies a driving licence for the person who brings the vehicle. Check the presenter’s documents rather than packing the owner’s licence when somebody else will attend. Missing the required identification can prevent the certificate from being issued at the time of the test.
Bring the vehicle registration document
The official preparation list asks for the vehicle registration book, registration certificate or licensing certificate. Locate it before test day and check that it relates to the car being presented. Do not rely on another customer saying they were not asked for theirs.
Keep appointment details with the documents
Our practical recommendation is to carry the confirmation so you can check the time, registration and exact centre. Keep evidence of any prepayment available if a query arises. These are useful booking records, distinct from the identification specified by NCTS.
Returning after an inspection
Keep the Vehicle Inspection Report with your papers. It identifies the result and defects to be addressed, and its printed deadline is more useful than a date remembered from a conversation. Arrange repairs and check whether the return is visual-only or needs test equipment.
If a document is missing or the details do not match
Contact the booking team before travelling. Explain which document is unavailable or what differs between the car, booking and paperwork. The published checklist does not establish that a photo, scan, passport or other substitute is accepted in every case, so we do not promise that one will be sufficient.
Keep personal information off this directory
Use the official NCTS channel for vehicle-specific queries. An editorial correction email should contain only the page link and the factual correction; do not attach your licence, registration certificate or card details.
What applies to you?
Open the case that matches your situation. These notes guide your next step; they do not check your booking.
Someone else is bringing my car
Make sure the person actually attending has their driving licence, together with the vehicle document and booking details.
I am returning for a retest
Keep the inspection report handy and organise the repairs and deadlines before the return visit.

Common questions
Is a passport or a photograph of my licence enough?
The official NCT preparation list specifies a driving licence and does not confirm every alternative. Ask NCTS about your specific document before the visit.
Do I use the same document list for VRT?
No. Vehicle registration tax appointments have different requirements. This checklist is for the NCT roadworthiness test.
Do I still need the vehicle document if I prepaid?
Prepayment covers the fee, not the preparation requirements. Bring the documentation in the official checklist.
