NCT priority list

What to do when the NCT dates shown are too late: how the official NCTS priority list works, and why to check it before paying a third-party alert service.

When the priority list is relevant

If the dates shown in the official calendar do not meet your needs, NCTS provides a priority-list option within its booking process. This is the operator’s own route for requesting an earlier appointment, separate from commercial cancellation-alert subscriptions.

How to request help

Start on the NCTS booking page with your vehicle registration and follow the priority-list option when offered. If you cannot locate it, or your booking situation is unclear, use the national booking team on 01 413 5992.

  • Keep the registration, preferred centre and your actual scheduling constraints ready.
  • Check the contact details you provide so the operator can reach you.
  • Keep any acknowledgement and read the appointment details if NCTS subsequently contacts you.

What the 28-day statement means

NCTS says it will endeavour to find an appointment within 28 days. That is a service aim, not a booked slot or a guarantee. The public calendar does not show all eventual capacity: NCTS says additional appointments are released as staffing schedules are finalised.

If you already have a confirmed booking

Do not remove a usable booking based only on a third-party comment. Ask NCTS whether you must cancel it to enter the priority list in your circumstances, and check the charge before confirming a cancellation. Confirm how your existing booking affects the request before giving up a date you could still use.

If an offered appointment does not work

Contact NCTS promptly rather than ignoring the message or assuming a second date will be offered. Give the existing appointment details and explain the change needed. Check whether the cancellation or rearrangement rules apply to the confirmed appointment.

If the test is overdue

Being on a list is not a test certificate and does not establish that your vehicle is safe to drive. Keep the car roadworthy and ask the relevant authority or your insurer about your specific circumstances. This guide does not treat booking evidence as permission to drive.

Choose your situation

What applies to you?

Open the case that matches your situation. These notes guide your next step; they do not check your booking.

No appointment booked yet

Check the official booking dates first, then follow the priority option if those dates do not work.

Confirmed appointment already held

Review the notice period and speak to NCTS before deciding whether to give up that appointment.

The car failed and needs a retest

The retest has separate booking and completion deadlines. Contact NCTS about retest availability; do not substitute a priority-list request for a booked retest.

Common questions

Does the list guarantee a test within 28 days?

No. NCTS describes an endeavour to find an appointment in that period, not a guarantee.

Do I need to buy an alert subscription?

The official priority-list route is offered by NCTS. A commercial alert service is a separate product; this guide does not sell or recommend one.

Who can check the status of my request?

NCTS can help with a registration-specific enquiry. The independent directory cannot inspect the list or your appointment.
